Let’s talk about tips and tricks that I kind of live by for staying in shape in my 40s (after two kids) and still enjoying life. I always get asked about fitness and eating, and if you girls have been following along for a while, you know I’m probably going to sound like a broken record. There’s no quick fix to getting in shape naturally. It really is just making an effort every single day. It’s making conscious decisions when choosing what to eat, how much to eat, what’s worth your splurges, and how often you move your body.
I’ll keep preaching… CONSISTENCY IS KEY.
Prioritizing Whole Foods
For me, it’s always about prioritizing whole foods, lean proteins, tons of veggies, and complex carbs. I try to taper them off the carbs slightly towards the afternoon and into the evening because let’s be honest, they just always find their way into your plate somehow. Whether you’re testing what you’re cooking or sampling some of your kids’ foods ;), there’s no way to avoid them. If I scale back in the afternoon, then I feel like it’s a better balance when they sneak in here or there.

Choosing Your Splurges
I always talk about picking and choosing your splurges. If you have been following along, you already know what mine are. It’s definitely a glass of wine or a good martini. I also love a ridiculously indulgent dessert (but only do those once or twice a month). I don’t love fried food, chips, cheese boards, or French fries… but I will absolutely get down on a warm soft pretzel, y’all, and I’m not sharing lol. It’s picking and choosing your splurges and just not having them all of the time.
Staying Active
Staying active is something that I started back in high school and it’s just a way of life for me now. If I don’t work out for a couple of days, I definitely feel off. I signed up for ClassPass; they may have it in your area, but it’s a monthly membership where you can try out different local gyms and workout studios. I find that it has been really great for switching things up and not getting bored with doing the same thing over again. If a local company is on ClassPass and I have a monthly credit, I will definitely be more likely to try it, and I found some really great spots that I love thanks to having that, so definitely recommend!
You all know I also love Pilates! It’s something I started two years ago, it’s still so challenging, but I feel like it has worked my body like no other. Have you been thinking about trying it? I highly recommend that as well!

Basically, it’s all about effort and balancing it out so you’re not killing yourself. Make it a lifestyle you can stick with, and it won’t feel like so much work. Stay active, be mindful when eating, keep track of those portion sizes, and treat yourself. If you fall off the wagon… get back at it the next day!
